IS FAKE GRASS ON THE WAY OUT?

- Mar 21, 2018 -

The fake grass of the 1960s was vastly different to today’s synthetic turf systems. Back then it consisted of short-pile fibres and no infill, but it did prove to be a better alternative to painting dead grass green.

Fake grass was originally produced to replace the natural grass of sporting arenas, where it was often difficult to keep the grass green and healthy. It’s now being broadly adopted globally for all types of sports and tournaments, such as FIFA and UEFA Champions League. What’s more, fake grass is now being installed in residential, commercial, and institutional spaces.

Research and Markets cite “The advancements in R&D, along with changing technologies and the high return on investment” are reasons for the uptake of fake grass.

The synthetic grass products available in today’s market also feature different pile fibres and heights, varying colours and shades to more resemble natural grass, and sand infills.

So, after almost 60 years since the birth of Astro Turf, is fake grass on the way out?

According to a recent IBIS World report on the industry trends for artificial grass installation – the demand for fake grass is on the up and here to stay.

It’s not unusual for a synthetic grass installer to spruik the benefits of fake grass. So, we thought it would be worthwhile to share some of the findings from this report to demonstrate why the popularity of artificial grass is growing:

The advancements in the quality and performance of the product;

The improved safety has increased application versatility;

The reduced water usage is both a cost-saving and benefit to the environment (which is especially true in drought-prone areas, like Brisbane);

The minimal up-keep provides long-term cost savings – there is no need for fertilizer or a mower;

There is an increased demand for artificial grass in residential properties;

There is an ongoing demand for schools and other institutional spaces and sports facilities;

The expected growth in the commercial construction markets will open new opportunities.

IBIS World also reported on the outlook for natural turf, which doesn’t fare as well as synthetic grass.

They found that consumers are accepting fake grass as a suitable substitute for natural turf. That along with the cost outlay and move towards high-density housing will most likely negatively impact the demand for instant natural grass.

The upside here is for consumers. They can now purchase high-quality synthetic grass with the knowledge and confidence that it’s just as viable a product as natural turf, in many cases, more superior.
