Artificial Turf Fields

When people look at a football pitch, they usually notice the green surface first. What often goes unseen is the engineered structure beneath the turf that determines how the field performs, drains, and protects athletes. A modern artificial football field is not a single product but a layered system, designed to work as a whole to deliver safety, durability, and consistent play.

At the foundation sits the sub-base, typically built from compacted soil and crushed aggregate. This layer provides structural stability and keeps the surface level under constant use. Industry standards usually specify a total thickness of 200–300 mm, with compaction rates above 95 percent, ensuring the field resists settlement and deformation over time. Proper grading and a subtle slope allow gravity to assist water movement before it reaches the drainage layer.

Above the sub-base, a drainage system channels rainwater away from the field. Perforated pipes and gravel beds work together to prevent water accumulation, allowing the surface to remain playable even after heavy rainfall. Efficient drainage is especially critical in regions with frequent storms or freeze-thaw cycles, where standing water can quickly compromise field safety.

A shock pad, often installed above the drainage layer, plays a key role in athlete protection. This elastic underlayment absorbs impact energy, helping control surface hardness and reducing stress on joints during tackles and falls. Consistent shock absorption also contributes to predictable ball behavior, which is essential for competitive play.

The visible turf layer consists of synthetic fibers tufted into a reinforced backing. Fiber height, yarn shape, and density are selected based on sport-specific performance requirements. Infill materials, such as silica sand or rubber granules, are brushed into the turf to support the fibers, improve traction, and fine-tune cushioning.
