Looking around your neighborhood or school, you will find that football pitches covered with artificial grass are usually infilled with quartz sands and black or other colored rubber granules. Don’t take it for granted. Why is it not the case with real grass covered football pitches?
There are 3 main functions of these infills:
1. Artificial turfs are made of fibers spun with polymers, so they need quartz sands and rubber granules to hold the fibers at the bottom and stabilize the turf surface. Usually, quartz sands are paved at the bottom and rubber granules are sprinkled on the top.
2. As there is no mud found beneath artificial grass turfs, players may be more prone to injuries when they hit the ground or fall over and have a strong impact against a hard turf. The introduction of highly bouncy rubber granules to synthetic grass can imitate the effects of real grass and avoid injuries caused by impacts against an otherwise hard turf surface.
3. Last but not least, polymer spun fibers have a more slippery surface than that of real grass, especially in rain. With the addition of rubber granules, there will be a bigger friction, leveling up the performance of the turfs.
