Most artificial grass turfs are made of PE yarn.
Although PA yarn is durable, it’s too stiff and burn players’ skins. So it’s mainly used in landscaping applications.
PP yarn is not so durable and does not have a long lifespan or wide applications. It is softer than PE yarn and features the best durability. It’s the best option in venues where players have high touch rate with the grass surface.
Yarns Types: Mesh Yarn And Spun Yarn
Mesh yarn has been enjoying great sales performance in a wide range of applications whereas spun yarn is an emerging variety. Spun yarn’s shape is closer to natural grass and aesthetically pleasing. Its durability performance is slightly better than mesh yarn and generally has a higher price tag than mesh yarn.
Pile Height
The pile height of sport artificial grass selling in Europe and USA is usually 60mm while the more popular height in China is 40-55mm. The higher the relative density and the pile height, the greater the cost of infilling materials and labor. Normally, a pile height of 50mm will suffice.
Relative Density Of Artificial Grass
The relative density of an artificial turf with a 50mm pile height is normally 10500turfs/sqm. However, the relative density of artificial grass turf is associated with its yarn’s dtex value and pile height. The higher the pile height and the dtex value, the lower the relative density you can set. In conclusion, make sure the net weight of grass fibers is around 1kg/sqm.
Backing Materials
The common backing material of artificial lawn is SBR Latex while there is a higher end SPU backing option. The difference is that grass fibers backed with SPU have a much greater pull out force than with SBR Latex. Also, SPU backing is glossy and can block moisture well. Because SPU backing can be done in one run and has fewer additives, it’s more Eco-friendly. However, the rising cost of SPU backing makes the finished product 20-30% more expensive than products with SBR Latex backing.
SPU backing is green in color and patented. There is no solvent, no formaldehyde emission and no free DTI. It’s Eco conscious and without hazardous substance emission. SPU backing is resilient to temperature impact. When being trimmed at the edge, it’s more resistant to tear. When being cut and tailored, the synthetic grass turf is less easy to disintegrate, its fibers are less prone to being pull out and the fiber clusters are harder to scatter and fall off. SPU backed fake grass is a better option for sports venues like badminton court, golf court, soccer pitch, basketball court, hockey field, football/rugby field, tennis court, kindergarten and school venues, etc.
