How Can Artificial Turf Adhere Securely And Without Peeling?

In artificial turf construction projects, the bonding process is often underestimated. However, as a crucial step in ensuring the structural integrity and long-term durability of the turf, careful attention to bonding details has a direct impact on the final quality of the surface. Whether it's a football field, a recreational lawn, or a school playground, a standardized and professional bonding process is fundamental to the success of any artificial grass installation. This article, based on JS's extensive project experience, offers a detailed analysis of key bonding procedures and important precautions.

Precise Glue Application: Controlling Thickness is the First Step to Successful Bonding
Glue application marks the beginning of the bonding stage. Although it may seem simple, it involves several technical considerations. It is essential to use a proper adhesive spreader to apply the glue evenly to the seam tape or backing material. The thickness of the glue layer directly influences the bonding strength-if it's too thin, the turf may peel off; if it's too thick, it may cause bubbling or surface warping. In practice, we recommend controlling the glue application speed for consistent coverage, and avoiding repeated overcoating. Especially under hot or humid conditions, it's important to manage the glue quantity to prevent rapid solvent evaporation, which can affect the viscosity balance.

Accurate Bonding: Weather Conditions Matter
After glue application, immediate bonding is not advised. The glue needs to partially dry to reach an optimal bonding state. Depending on environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and air pressure, the drying time typically ranges from 10 to 30 minutes. The ideal time for bonding is when the glue feels dry to the touch but still retains enough tack. Neglecting this step can result in poor adhesion. During bonding, a seam roller or joint caulker should be used to align and press the turf down firmly. Once bonded, the turf should not be repositioned, as this could compromise the bond integrity and reduce the overall strength of the synthetic turf system.

Rubber Hammer Pressing: Don't Skip the Pressure Step
A rubber hammer is indispensable during bonding. After placing the turf, use the hammer to press down the seam line from the center outward. This ensures full contact between the seam tape and the synthetic grass backing, improving glue penetration. In one of JS's outdoor court projects, turf bubbles appeared a few days after installation. Upon inspection, it turned out the hammering step had been overlooked. Since then, we've incorporated this as a mandatory training point in every construction team's checklist, significantly reducing bonding failures.

Curing Management: Avoid Disturbance for Best Results
Once bonding is completed, proper curing is critical. Generally, the initial curing period lasts three days, with full bonding strength tested after around ten days. During this period, avoid walking on or dragging objects across the surface. Direct sunlight, water exposure, or heavy traffic can all interfere with curing. If infill materials like quartz sand and rubber granules haven't been applied yet, we recommend using industrial-grade vacuums to remove loose turf fragments and keep the synthetic grass surface clean, preventing contamination of the curing adhesive.

Adapting to Seasonal Conditions: Cold Weather Needs Attention
Bonding conditions must also be adjusted according to seasonal or environmental changes. In cold climates, adhesives may thicken, losing their normal flow and affecting spreadability. In these cases, gently heating the glue to around 15–20°C can restore its usability without degrading performance. Also, avoid exposing solvent-based adhesives to open air for too long during application, as this will lead to quick solvent loss, high viscosity, and reduced workability.

Behind every vibrant stretch of synthetic turf lies countless hours of careful craftsmanship. As a professional manufacturer, JS focuses not only on delivering durable materials but also on refining critical steps like bonding and installation. We believe that successful artificial turf projects are not only built with quality products, but also through well-executed, reliable, and standardized construction processes.
