Key Technical Indicators For Evaluating High-Quality Artificial Turf


In the highly competitive B-end market, whether it is landscape design, commercial projects, or sports facilities construction, consider rephrasing to something more natural like "has become a necessity rather than a luxury". Many buyers tend to focus on appearance or price in the early stage, but truly experienced developers, designers, and project managers understand that it is never the surface that determines the long-term use of the lawn, but the technical details hidden under the structure.

 

Over the past decade, I have come into contact with customers from North America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and other countries, and have also dealt with cases where installations had to be repaired just a year later. In the final analysis, the technical evaluation standards for high-quality artificial grass are nothing more than the following core elements.

 

Grass material: the starting point of durability and comfort
The material of grass is the basis for determining the performance of the lawn. Currently, there are three common types of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and nylon on the market. For landscape use, PE is the most ideal choice, which offers a balanced combination of softness, resilience and UV resistance. We once installed a batch of PP grass in a seaside resort in Dubai. Although the price was low, the grass began to become brittle and white in just one summer, and eventually had to be removed and reinstalled. After replacing it with UV-stabilized PE grass, it can still maintain its natural color and elasticity even under strong sunlight.

 

Lawn density and needle spacing: determine visual realism and foot feel
If the material defines the "character" of the grass, then the density determines the "experience" of the grass. The density of the lawn is usually measured by the number of needles per square meter and the dtex (fiber thickness) of the grass. High density means that the lawn is thicker, visually closer to natural lawns, and softer to the feet. This is especially important in high-end residential or hotel projects. We once provided lawns for a boutique hotel in Vancouver. The customer initially chose a low-density version. As a result, after the construction, it was found that the lawn appeared patchy or uneven and the foot felt hard, so it had to be replaced with a high-needle version. In the end, the grass used more than 16,000 needles/㎡ and dtex of 10,000, which greatly improved customer satisfaction and reduced subsequent maintenance complaints.

 

Backing structure: determines the stability and durability of the lawn
The backing system is the "skeleton" that supports the entire lawn structure. High-quality artificial grass usually uses a three-layer backing structure: a triple-layer backing consisting of PP fabric, a mesh layer, and SBR latex. This composite structure can not only improve mechanical strength, but also enhance the fixation of grass fibers (Tuft Bind). I have a South American customer who used a certain brand sample for a project. It looks very similar to one of our products on the surface, but the actual peel strength test is far below the international standard, causing the grass fibers to fall off in large quantities after frequent trampling. Since then, every batch of goods we ship will be accompanied by a complete peel strength and aging test report to ensure that each roll of grass can withstand the test of time and trampling.

 

Drainage performance: the hidden key in bad weather
Drainage is an often overlooked but extremely important performance indicator for outdoor paving lawns. Poor drainage can lead to water accumulation, mold, and even damage to the base structure. High-quality lawns usually have 30 to 60 drainage holes per square meter to ensure that rainwater quickly penetrates the backing and seeps into the ground base. We used unperforated turf in a municipal project in Southeast Asia. As a result, residents complained frequently in less than half a year and the site had to be re-paved. Since then, we have set a minimum drainage performance threshold of 60 liters per square meter per hour, and conduct sampling and actual testing before leaving the factory.

 

Flame retardant and environmental safety standards
In public places such as schools, parks, and hotels, flame retardant grades and environmental certifications have become the bottom line for whether products can be accepted. Standards such as ASTM E648 and DIN 4102 can be used to evaluate the flame retardant properties of turf, while REACH standards and ROHS certifications ensure that products do not contain harmful substances. Especially in the European market, customers are increasingly concerned about whether the materials contain heavy metals, phthalates, etc. SGS pointed out in a 2023 test report that 18% of non-REACH certified turfs on the market have excessive chemical substances, which not only affects brand reputation, but may also bring compliance risks. Therefore, when purchasing, be sure to request the original test report and certificate, rather than relying solely on product labels or verbal promises.

 

Conclusion: Technical standards determine the return cycle
When purchasing artificial grass for commercial projects, please go beyond the first impression of "price" and "picture" and verify the grass material, needle density, backing structure, drainage test and environmental certification from the technical dimension. A truly high-quality lawn - such as the PE grass, three-layer composite backing, and excellent drainage capacity produced by our JS - can provide a 6-10 year service life, low maintenance cost, stable performance, and adaptability to different climates around the world.
